Who We Are

Al Spagnolo, AIA, NCARB

Chairman

Since establishing the firm in 1991, he has led its efforts to balance design excellence with responsible pragmatism, enhance the public realm, apply the latest technological advances, and promote environmental conservation.

As Chairman, Al oversees the direction of SGA, supervises new business development, and serves as the partner in charge for complex commissions in the commercial, life sciences, healthcare, and higher education markets.  Under his leadership, the firm has grown significantly.  Key milestones include the opening of a satellite office in New York City and the creation of a Virtual Design and Construction practice, which was a factor in Fast Company’s inclusion of SGA in its 2018 list of the Most Innovative Companies.

Al received an Associate of Architecture from Wentworth Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Architecture (cum laude) from Ohio State University.  A registered architect in 13 states, he is an active member of the AIA, BSA, NCARB, the National Organization of Minority Architects, the Urban Land Institute, and the Alpha Rho Chi professional fraternity.  He also serves as a guest lecturer at Wentworth Institute of Technology and Boston Architectural College.

Outside of the office, Al volunteers at Massachusetts General Hospital and supports community organizations such as Building Impact and the Neal J. Tompkins Memorial Scholarship Fund.  He enjoys spending time with his four grandchildren.
