Founded in 1991 on the belief that talented employees and strong collaboration lead to exceptional outcomes, SGA has grown into a trusted partner for some of the most complex and high-performing environments in the country, delivering tens of millions of square feet across a wide range of sectors.
That founding ethos continues to guide the firm today, propelling SGA’s continued growth. Over the past five years alone, the firm has billed more than $100.5 million in professional services, reflecting both the scale of its work and the depth of its client relationships. From multi-family and mixed-use developments to complex research, workplace, and academic environments, SGA has evolved in lockstep with its clients’ ambitions — while also delivering advanced manufacturing environments with an integrated, collaborative approach.
“This milestone reflects our longstanding history and the people and partnerships that have shaped our culture. Today, SGA operates throughout New York and Boston, serving clients in various markets across the country. The firm’s current active portfolio spans 50 million square feet, underscoring its continued momentum across sectors and geographies. Among its most significant projects, 50 and 60 Binney Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, represents SGA’s largest to date, with more than 750,000 square feet of innovative office and research space. The firm is also recognized for a series of industry groundbreaking achievements, including Massachusetts’ first two Passive House–certified student residence halls, New England’s first mass timber office building, and Boston’s first LEED Zero Carbon research facility.
The firm continues to invest in innovation, sustainability, and advanced digital tools, reinforcing its position as a leader in the architecture and design industry. As it enters its next chapter, SGA is focused on expanding its reach in key growth markets and continuing to deliver thoughtful, high-performing environments — always with the same collaborative spirit that has defined the firm since its founding.

The bridge will advance the development of the pedestrian bridge between Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ Leiden Centers 1 and 2

BOSTON — February 18, 2026 – SGA, a leader in architecture, interior design, master planning, and virtual design and construction (VDC), celebrates the successful design and installation of the Vertex Skybridge, a highly engineered pedestrian connection linking Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ Leiden Center 1 and Leiden Center 2 at 22 Drydock Avenue in Boston’s South Boston Waterfront. Installed on January 31, 2026, the Skybridge strengthens connectivity across Vertex’s research and manufacturing campus.
Spanning approximately 98.5 feet in length and 14 feet in width, the passage is positioned roughly 33 feet above the roadway and connects the third floors of both facilities. A defining feature of the project is its Design for Disassembly (DfD) approach, intentionally designed and engineered with mechanical, non-permanent interfaces that allow it to be removed, reused, or reconfigured without demolition or damage to the adjacent buildings. This strategy preserves both the architectural expression and structural integrity of Leiden Centers 1 and 2 and enables their seamless restoration to independent, autonomous buildings, whether for single or multi-tenant use. In doing so, the DfD strategy reduces material waste, supports sustainability objectives, and ensures the bridge remains an adaptable infrastructure element rather than a permanent constraint on future development.
In a significant milestone for the project, SGA secured unanimous approval from the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) following an extensive entitlement process, including several meetings and presentations with city agencies such as the Boston Civic Design Commission (BCDC). As one of the few pedestrian bridges approved in Boston, the Vertex Skybridge represents a rare achievement in urban connectivity and infrastructure. “From the outset, the Skybridge was conceived as more than a connector,” said Joseph Mamayek, AIA, Design Principal at SGA. “We focused on creating an adaptable, high-performance element that could respond to evolving operational needs while maintaining architectural precision. By designing for disassembly, we ensured the connection could evolve over time — supporting sustainability goals without compromising the integrity or identity of the buildings it serves.”
Constructed by Consigli Construction, the Skybridge reflects a highly coordinated effort to deliver a complex, elevated connection within a dense urban environment. SGA’s design prioritizes safety, efficiency, and sustainability, seamlessly integrating into the fabric of the South Boston Innovation District while reinforcing Vertex’s commitment to scientific advancement and patient care.

In the dynamic landscape of New York City, development is an intricate dance between innovation, regulation, and execution. It requires a design partner who not only understands the unique density of the city but also the nuances of its ever-evolving market and complex regulatory environment. Reza Rahimpour, AIA, LEED® AP, Principal of Architecture at SGA’s New York office, brings a refined perspective on crafting thoughtful, high-value solutions – ones that seamlessly merge visionary drive with practical feasibility, elevating the built environment with a sensitivity to both form and function.
What’s the most important consideration when designing in a dense urban market like New York City?
In an environment like this, the most critical consideration is how a building maximizes value within a limited surrounding. Space is at a premium, regulations are intricate, and community impact is significant. This means every decision must be intentional – from optimizing light, air, and views to creating efficient and pleasant experiences for the occupants.
At SGA, we focus on innovative strategies that navigate complex zoning and landmark restrictions, ensuring projects respect neighborhood character and elevate the human experience. Ultimately, success in NYC means balancing density with livability, and ambition with buildability.
How do you align design vision with zoning constraints and development goals?
It’s all about transforming constraints into opportunities. We begin with a deep dive into the regulatory framework and the client’s specific objectives, meticulously analyzing zoning, bulk, height, and other critical factors. Our approach is to creatively interpret these parameters, meeting compliance as we advance both function and aesthetic aspirations.
Early and continuous engagement with clients, consultants, and city officials is paramount. This strategy allows us to navigate complexities, pursue variances when beneficial, and ultimately deliver architecture that is both forward-thinking and inherently achievable.
What defines a successful architect-developer relationship in your view?
Success stems from a shared vision and proactive partnership. What truly differentiates SGA is our ability to deeply understand a developer’s core business drivers – budget, timeline, and ROI – while still advocating for exceptional design, user experience, and long-term value.
It’s about maintaining open, solution-oriented communication and staying agile enough to adapt without compromising quality. When both parties collaborate early and consistently, the outcome is architecture that excels not only visually but also financially, socially, and environmentally. Looking at every development in the long run and underscoring the fact that our decisions today impact the community and environment long beyond our lifetime, triggers a sense of responsibility that is the key to a timeless architecture.
You’ve worked on complex adaptive reuse and ground-up projects. How does that experience inform your approach today?
My experience across both adaptive reuse and new construction has provided a unique depth of perspective. Adaptive reuse teaches resourcefulness and a keen ability to uncover hidden potential within existing structures, respecting their history while envisioning their future and, in general, offers a more environmentally conscious approach to development.
Ground-up work, on the other hand, allows for unconstrained innovation – purpose-built to meet evolving needs with intention and clarity. It offers a rare freedom to align architectural expression with programmatic function, urban context, and long-term resilience.
This dual expertise brings a balance of creative vision and pragmatic execution. Whether transforming a historic building or conceptualizing a new high-rise, the core focus remains on the human experience – crafting spaces that are not only aesthetically compelling but fundamentally enhance how people live, work, and interact.
How do you help clients balance ambitious design with speed to market and construction efficiency?
Delivering bold ideas on accelerated timelines hinges on foresight and prioritization. We leverage advanced tools like BIM, Grasshopper, modular systems, and prefabrication to streamline construction while retaining quality, enabling impactful architecture delivered on time and within budget.
