Once an important military production center overlooking the Charles River, the Alexandria Center® for Life Science at

the arsenal on the charles

is being transformed into an innovative life sciences campus that will feature three new SGA-designed buildings.

500 North Beacon Street

500 North Beacon Street celebrates the rich history of the campus while injecting the site with a contemporary aesthetic. The new office and research laboratory facility, which is targeting LEED Gold and Fitwel certifications, consists of two main volumes: a four-story structure clad in vertical copper fins and a lower glass volume featuring a large fourth floor terrace.

4 Kingsbury Avenue

4 Kingsbury Avenue anchors the edge of the new arrival court on Kingsbury Avenue. Located in a dense area of the campus, the new office and research laboratory facility was designed to feel light and encourage transparency while the brick detailing on the first three floors harkens back to the historical structures on campus. Its glass front facade encourages visual connections to the new arrival court and sets the building apart from its red-brick neighbors. 4 Kingsbury Avenue is targeting LEED Gold and Fitwel certifications.

West Garage

The Alexandria Center® for Life Science at the Arsenal on the Charles is a vibrant campus hugging the edge of the Charles River. To celebrate this environment, a new, 6,000-square-foot pavilion will be added to the North face of the existing parking garage on the West end of the campus. The new pavilion is designed to achieve net zero and is targeting LEED Gold and Fitwel certifications.

The exterior envelope of the building is defined by a perforated aluminum mesh canopy that doubles as an open rain screen. It is supported by a visible wood-clad steel structure as a nod to the site’s industrial history and the abundance of heavy timber and steel frame buildings in the area.
